The Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences, School of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (VMBS), Texas A&M University (TAMU) invites applications for a full-time, 11-month/year, clinical track, non-tenure accruing faculty position in Large Animal Emergency and Critical Care. This appointment may be at the rank of Clinical Assistant or Clinical Associate Professor, commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.
The clinical track faculty hire will devote approximately 35% effort to clinical service and patient care, 40% to didactic teaching, 15% to scholarly activities, and 10% to service.
1. Clinical service: The Large Animal Emergency Critical Care (ECC) service is an after-hours service shared by 3 dedicated clinicians on a rotational clinical schedule. It is supported by a 24-hour, 365-days-per-year staffed Intensive Care Unit and four rotating interns. The caseload consists of urgent and emergent equine and farm animal gastrointestinal, respiratory, urogenital, and orthopedic cases, but this list is not all-inclusive. Available diagnostic equipment includes after-hours bloodwork, 1m and 3m endoscopes, dynamic endoscopy, ultrasound, and radiology including CT/MRI capabilities. Five OR suites accommodate orthopedic, soft tissue, and colic cases as well as separate standing surgery suites for laparoscopy/laser surgery and dental procedures. A separate isolation facility houses infectious disease patients. The ECC service is supported by faculty members with expertise in orthopedic and soft tissue surgery, internal medicine, dentistry, diagnostic imaging, anesthesia, clinical pathology, and theriogenology. Cases presenting after-hours are transferred to the most appropriate receiving service the morning after presentation on weekdays and/or on the first working day following a weekend.
2. Teaching: The faculty member will participate in the clinical training of veterinary students, specialty residents, and interns. Teaching responsibilities include collaborative instruction of didactic courses for students in the pre-clinical veterinary curriculum, clinical instruction of fourth year veterinary students as they rotate through emergency duty, participation in a variety of departmental and interdepartmental rounds and seminars, and training of rotating interns and residents. The faculty member should be an effective teacher and able to work with persons from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. The development of innovative instructional delivery is encouraged and valued.
3. Scholarly activity and service: The faculty member will contribute to collaborative research and scholarly activity that is synergistic with the VMBS research, teaching, and clinical service missions. For individuals with the appropriate interests and expertise, engagement in clinical and/or educational research is encouraged. Promotion of departmental culture through active participation in departmental and professional organization service is expected.
The Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences includes over 40 faculty members across two campuses (College Station and at the VERO 2 2 program in Canyon, TX) with diverse backgrounds and scholarly interests. Clinical units at College Station include Emergency Critical Care, Equine Internal Medicine, Equine Surgery, Equine Theriogenology, Equine Field Services, Equine Community Practice, Equine Sports Medicine and Imaging, Food Animal Medicine and Surgery, Food Animal Field Services and Radiology. The communities of Bryan and College Station have a combined approximate population of 270,000 and are an expanding and diverse metropolitan area with a wide variety of cultural and recreational opportunities, excellent schools, and a relatively low cost of living.
