Description

The School of Engineering Medicine at Texas A&M University is seeking a collaborative and inspirational leader to serve as the Senior Associate Dean of Research with an anticipated start date in Spring 2024. This position is for a full-time tenure review upon hire appointment as a full professor. This position is a mixture of administrative and research efforts as a tenured faculty at Texas A&M University, and candidate is expected to make significant contributions in the areas of scholarly research/creative work, teaching, and service.

ENMED is the School of Engineering Medicine’s innovative medical education program, developed in collaboration with Texas A&M School of Medicine, Texas A&M College of Engineering and Houston Methodist Hospital.  ENMED graduates receive a Doctor of Medicine and a Master of Engineering in four years.  This first-in-the-nation program blends experiential learning in engineering innovation with medical school training to create a type of healthcare professional, a “physicianeer” with the goal of transforming health care.  ENMED is located in Houston’s Texas Medical Center.

This position will have the opportunity to help direct an overall strategic vision which will pave the School’s academic, research, medical, engineering, and clinical missions.  This individual will be a highly innovative and visionary leader with a drive to revolutionize medical education.  The Senior Associate Dean of Research will work to advance blending medical and engineering education, foster a culture of innovation, and facilitate collaborations with internal, external, and industry partners. The Senior Associate Dean of Research reports to the Executive Associate Dean of the School of Engineering Medicine.

Duties include:

  • Initiates and maintains programs to enhance faculty and student development in the areas of research, scholarship, creative activity, and extramural funding
  • Coordinates major, large-scale research initiatives with The Texas A&M University System Office of Research, other Texas A&M University System institutions and agencies, as well as other universities, national laboratories, research institutions, and private profit and non-profit sponsors
  • Demonstrates a deep knowledge of the federal and state research funding agencies and engages these agencies in coordination with the University and System Offices of Government Relations
  • Strives continually to prioritize efforts to provide researchers and students access to state-of-the-art instrumentation, technologies, and specialized scientific services
  • Develops strategies for long-term investment and sustainability of core research facilities
Qualifications

Education and Experience –

  • Doctorate degree and significant research experience 
  • History of progressively responsible administrative/leadership positions.
  • Should have served as a principal investigator of large, competitive federal research grants and/or demonstrated success in attracting support for research from the private sector
  • Teaching and research portfolio commendable of a tenured professor

Knowledge and Skills –

  • Substantial experience in managing large research grants, knowledge of and commitment to research compliance, a passion for developing commercial partnerships and in the commercialization of university research
  • Demonstrated success in leading interdisciplinary research teams
  • Experience in and an appreciation for land-grant universities, including the ability to work with both engineering and health sciences research and extension agencies is essential
  • The ability to attract and recruit top talent, motivate the team and manage performance
  • The ability to set clear and challenging goals while committing the organization to improved performance
  • Recognized for scholarly competence, significant individual achievement in research, academic leadership, and administrative abilities
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external constituents
