Tenure-Track: Assistant Professor in Dance

The College of Performance, Visualization & Fine Arts (PVFA) at Texas A&M University invites applications for one (1) Tenure-Track Assistant Professor with a 9-month full-time academic appointment beginning Fall 2025. PVFA and the Dance, Music, and Theatre Performance Section seek an individual who demonstrates expertise and a research portfolio in dance science or health/wellness fields and expertise in any of the following:

• Anatomy
• biomechanics,
• health/wellness
• injury prevention
• other kinesiology-based courses
• and/or Pilates.

Candidates should be able to teach various courses/topics in dance science and/or Pilates at the undergraduate/graduate level. Candidates are expected to develop and maintain competitive research activities (including scholarly and creative work).

Additionally, candidates are expected to teach courses that focus on courses in dance science and/or Pilates such as:

• Introduction to Dance Science
• Special Populations in Dance
• Teaching Functional Anatomy
• Wellness for Performing Artists
• Safe Practices for Teaching Dance
• Research Methods in Dance
• Conducting Dance Science Research
• Screening and Assessment in Dance
• Health Practices in Dance, Movement Analysis in Dance
• Pilates Mat, Pilates Apparatus

Beginning through Advanced levels.

Additionally, candidates are expected to develop and implement new curriculum pertaining to the PVFA College programs, particularly in the areas of dance science and/or Pilates as well as contribute to academic service including student mentorship. Candidates will be expected to gain visibility through peer-reviewed academic research publications, juried creative and scholarly works, or both. Priority will also be given to faculty members who demonstrate the ability to pursue external funding to support their work.

The College of Performance, Visualization & Fine Arts is a new College within the Texas A&M University System and has a diverse and dynamic mission with more than 100 faculty and over 30 staff members and a projected exponential growth in the next 5 years. The school was formed from three departments/programs spread across the university: the Department of Visualization, the Department of Performance Studies, and the Dance Science Program. The mission of PVFA places a heavy emphasis on faculty and student collaboration and interdisciplinary work in both scholarly and creative research. Texas A&M University leadership has charged the College with developing innovative research and creative works, public performances, and degree offerings at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels that build upon our strength in merging art and science, as well as the traditional fields of music, dance, art, and theater.

The Dance Program within the College of Performance, Visualization and Fine Arts currently offers a B.S. Dance Science degree in addition to minors in dance performance and choreography and is in the approval process to add a minor in Pilates for Fall 2025. The program is also in the approval process for an MFA in Dance with an anticipated start date of Summer 2025.  Applicants should consult the school’s website to review our academic and research programs (https://pvfa.tamu.edu/).

Candidates must have a terminal degree (PhD or MFA) by the appointment start date within any field that relates to the descriptions above. Candidates must have visibility through peer-reviewed academic research publications, juried creative works, or both. Successful applicants must have a minimum of 2 years of university teaching experience, evidence of scholarly and/or creative activity at the state, regional, national and/or international level, involvement in student mentoring, and demonstration of interdisciplinary and/or collaborative work. Priority will also be given to faculty members who demonstrate the ability to pursue external funding to support their work. Candidates are expected to be credentialed to teach at the graduate and undergraduate levels and must have a research agenda that informs and advances current trends in the field.
