The College of Engineering at Texas A&M University invites applications for a full-time tenured Professor and Department Head for the Zachry Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The projected start date will be Spring 2026 with an appointment term of 11-months. The candidate must be an innovative and visionary leader with excellent communication skills and a clear commitment to collaborative practices. They should demonstrate a strong record of accomplishments in research, academic or industry leadership, teaching, and scholarship. The successful candidate will guide one of the nation’s top engineering programs and will be expected to recruit, retain, and lead outstanding faculty, further advancing the department’s research and educational excellence.
The Zachry Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Texas A&M University serves the state, national, and global community by educating and empowering future leaders to address the complex challenges of infrastructure development, environmental sustainability, and societal resilience. We are among the largest and most comprehensive programs in the United States, with a current enrollment of approximately 898 undergraduate and over 379 graduate students. Our undergraduate and graduate programs are consistently ranked among the top in the nation (e.g., U.S. News & World Report). The 50 tenured and tenure-track and over 24 academic-track faculty members in the department are internationally recognized for their groundbreaking research, innovative education, and impactful service. The faculty, staff, and students within the department foster a collaborative and supportive environment, promoting innovation and discovery. The department offers B.S. degrees in civil engineering and environmental engineering, and M.S., M.Eng., and Ph.D. in civil engineering, as well as specialized graduate programs. The vast majority of our PhD students are supported through research assistantships, teaching assistantships, and prestigious fellowships. Our undergraduate programs are accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc. (ABET).
Specific duties and responsibilities include:
- Providing leadership of the faculty, staff, and students to define and achieve departmental goals.
- Managing the department’s staff, faculty, and finances.
- Serving as liaison for the department to the College of Engineering and the Texas A&M University System.
- Representing the department to state and federal agencies, private organizations, partners and collaborators, key industry groups, and the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department Heads Organization.
- Promoting the research and educational opportunities associated with the department to other civil and environmental engineering departments and other universities.
- Providing leadership for continuing acquisition of internal and external resources for the department.
- Leading the development of the department’s strategic plan with input from key stakeholders.
- Engaging with donors, former students, and other stakeholders.
