Description

The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (VMBS) at Texas A&M University is delighted to announce a position in our small animal surgery service. Thi s i s a tenure-track, full-time, 11-month appointment position in small animal orthopedic surgery at the rank of assistant professor. The anticipated start date for this position is the Summer of 2025.

The successful candidate will devote up to 50% of their time (negotiable) to clinical instruction and patient care in the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. The remaining assigned effort will consist of service (10%), research and scholarship (30%), and classroom/laboratory teaching (10%). Clinical duties will be shared among all surgery faculty and a team of interns and residents. Clinical responsibilities will include primary management of cases, instruction of veterinary students, mentorship of interns and residents, and participation in after-hours surgical emergency coverage. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to interact with over 60 faculty members in the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences and an active group of house officers that includes more than 50 rotating interns and residents in the other medical and surgical disciplines.

The Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital has sophisticated diagnostic and patient care equipment, including multiple arthroscopy towers, a full array of orthopedic equipment, including total joint replacement, and a gait lab for clinical and research use. The 7 surgical suites are well-equipped and supported by a team of dedicated surgical technicians, allowing a surgical technician to be present for the duration of each surgical procedure. The CT, 3T MRI, and CT Tomotherapy unit are housed in an onsite imaging center. The teaching hospital employs capable personnel, including, but not limited to, talented ICU technicians, an active multidisciplinary interventional radiology service, three in-house pharmacists with compounding capability, and a clinical trials coordinator. Construction has begun on the new state-of-the-art, 135,000-square-foot hospital, with plans for opening in August 2027.

Qualifications

The applicant must have a DVM degree (or equivalent) and must be a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) and be licensed or eligible for a regular or special license to practice veterinary medicine in Texas.
