Description

The Department of Global Languages & Cultures, in the College of Arts & Sciences at Texas A&M University, invites applications for one (1) tenure-track assistant professor for a full-time 9-month appointment beginning in fall 2026. The department seeks an individual who demonstrates expertise in the economic history of Classical Athens.

Candidates should demonstrate expertise in areas such as:

·         political, social, and economic history of Classical Athens

·         the institutional framework of Classical Athens’ democracy and the civic behaviors among its body politic

·         issues of textual and literary criticism in the works of ancient Athenian dramatists and historians

·         Economics of Civic Motivation in Classical Athens

·         Old Comedy as Civic Education

·         Citizen laborers in Classical Athens

Candidates must have a demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate courses. Candidates are expected to develop and maintain a research program commensurate with the expectations of an R-1 institution and contribute to academic service including supervision of a Classics Club for undergraduate students.

The Department of Global Languages and Cultures offers degrees/programs in modern languages and Classics, and graduate degrees in Hispanic Studies, in addition to offering undergraduate minors in African Studies, Religious Studies, and Jewish Studies. Qualifications

Required: PhD in Classics, as well as training in Greek, Latin, and Philology.

·        Demonstrated evidence of a research program commensurate with the expectations of an R1 institution, including publications and professional presentations in the economic history of Classical Athens as well as the institutional frameworks of Classical Athens' democracy and civic motivations and behaviors.

·        Native proficiency in Modern Greek, and proficiency in reading for Ancient Greek and Ancient Latin.

·        At least three years of experience teaching undergraduates at an R1 institution in courses such as Classical Mythology, Advanced Classical Greek Poetry, Classical Greek (all levels), Classical Latin (all levels), Women in Ancient Greece and Rome.

Preferred:

·      Evidence of early career teaching and research excellence through recognized awards and fellowships.

·      Experience supervising both undergraduate and graduate research/theses.
