The School of Medicine at Texas A&M University invites applications for a full-time, tenured, 11-month appointment as Professor and Senior Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development, with a start date in the Spring of 2024. Reporting to the Dean of the School of Medicine, the Senior Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development is a member of the senior leadership team of the School, working collaboratively with the central administration, department heads, center and institute directors, and faculty members to support and advance the strategic goals of the University, School and department.

Texas A&M University is a top-tier research university with >$1billion of annual research funding and an outstanding record of training undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. The School of Medicine is the largest of five Colleges/Schools at the Texas A&M University Health Science Center, which is based on the main university campus in Bryan/College Station, Texas and includes campuses distributed throughout the State of Texas.

Responsibilities for this position as Professor will include participation in one School of Medicine curriculum course and/or collaboration with an existing Research team, as well as academic service to the School of Medicine and Texas A&M University. The assigned department for this individual will be based on their area of expertise.

The Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development will have central oversight of the affairs and development of the School of Medicine faculty across five campuses and multiple sites and locations. 

Responsibilities:

  • Mentor and supervise staff and faculty in the School of Medicine Office of Faculty Affairs as well as the Office of Professional Development
  • Direct reports include assistant dean for professional development, and the director of faculty affairs.
  • Serve as the liaison between the university’s office of faculty affairs, to include disseminating new faculty policies and actions implemented by the university.
  • Implement policy changes enacted by the university's office of faculty affairs and ensure compliance with all protocols and procedures as required by Texas A&M University and the Texas A&M System.
  • Develop and disseminate new and existing school of medicine faculty guidelines and policies as needed.
  • Provide oversight for faculty searches and hiring.
  • Conduct tenure review upon hire process in conjunction with the hiring department.
  • Coordinate credentialing process for new faculty hires.
  • Coordinate faculty annual reviews
  • Review faculty performance evaluations and report unsatisfactory performance to the dean and vice provost for faculty affairs
  • Coordinate and conduct department head first-year, midterm, and reappointment review process
  • Oversee post-tenure review process
  • Organize endowed chair review as needed
  • Facilitate department head review process, to include first-year, midterm and reappointment reviews.
  • Oversee promotion and tenure process.
  • Conduct promotion and tenure workshops for faculty
  • Review and approve departmental guidelines and forward to faculty affairs for approval.
  • Oversee midterm faculty reviews.
  • Coordinate School committee review for P&T, as well as other faculty evaluations such as post-tenure review, endowed chair review, etc.
  • Draft P&T letters for the dean
  • Accompany dean to P&T process review meetings with the provost and vice provost for faculty affairs
  • Plan and facilitate faculty development activities.
  • Coordinate Faculty Development Leave program.
  • Review emeritus/emerita applications.
  • Consult on faculty grievances as needed.
  • Assist the department heads and dean with faculty retention procedures as directed.
  • Coordinate School of Medicine partner placement, extensions for probationary review, external employment requests, faculty leaves of absense, and faculty joint appointments as needed.
  • Attend all regular school meetings, to include weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual meetings.
  • Conduct regular campus, site, and location visits.
  • Other duties as assigned.

*Note: If the individual holding this position steps down from the administrative role of Senior Associate Dean, the individual will retain their tenured faculty role with a 2 month salary gap to be covered by the individual.

Qualifications

Required

  • MD, DO, PhD, EdD, JD or other equivalent professional degree
  • Record of scholarship commensurate with appointment as a tenured Professor of the School of Medicine.

Preferred

  • Previous experience with Faculty Affairs and/or Faculty Development (e.g., Department Chair/Associate Chair)
  • Minimum of seven years administrative experience
  • Record of commitment to a culture of institutional stewardship and transparency, as well as efficient and effective business operations.  As a key leader at the Texas A&M School of Medicine, the new Senior Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development will be expected to build on the successes of prior leadership, leveraging the talents of a diverse faculty, staff, and students, to chart continued success and increase the national and international reputation of the School's research and educational endeavors.
