Description

The Department of Marine Biology at Texas A&M University at Galveston invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure accruing position with a 9-month academic appointment (September 1, 2024 – May 31, 2025); however, the anticipated start date is August 1, 2024, to allow for onboarding, training and class preparation. Applicants will be considered for the faculty title of Instructional Assistant Professor in Marine Evolution and/or Developmental Biology.

The successful candidate will teach courses in evolution, developmental biology, cell, molecular, and/or develop new courses, with a focus on marine organisms and environments. The expectation is for the candidate to teach 6 courses per year (3/semester). The courses taught will enhance the department's training of students to enter careers in Blue Economy fields including education, outreach, health, veterinary, and environmental sciences (https://www.tamug.edu/AcademicAffairs/StrategicPlan.html) (as stated in TAMUGs 2020-2025 Strategic Plan). This position will greatly enhance the existing instructional expertise in the department by providing a strong and diverse base of introductory, mid-level, and upper-level (i.e., graduate) courses to enhance student success, as well as provide opportunities for students to customize degree plans that will make them more competitive as they transition to the career arena of their choice. 

The successful candidate will be expected to: 1) Develop curricula in evolutionary and developmental biology to be taught at the undergraduate and graduate levels. 2) Teach in the department’s undergraduate curricula and may be requested to rotate and teach select classes within the candidate's area of expertise. 3) The candidate is also expected to develop new undergraduate classes in their area of expertise and is encouraged to develop a study abroad class if suitable. 4) Provide service to the MARB department and university in the form of committee memberships. As years of service accumulate, the person will expand their service to include college-level and university-level participation, and to provide leadership on those committees. 5) Participate in mentoring programs, pedagogical, and career building workshops.

Qualifications

Required qualifications: Ph.D. in biology, evolution, marine biology, developmental biology, marine science, biological oceanography, or related fields; Preferred qualifications: Teaching experience at the college level.
