The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences, School of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (SVMBS), Texas A&M University is excited to invite applicants to a tenured or tenure-track faculty position at the rank of assistant/associate/full professor in veterinary oncology with an anticipated start date in Spring or Fall 2023. The Integrated Oncology Service has 3 medical oncology faculty lines and 2 radiation oncology faculty lines, with a plan to begin recruiting a surgical oncologist in the next 12 months.  Integrated Oncology Service faculty have a critical role in student education, patient care, and scholarship.  The service is also staffed with 11 technicians and has 2 medical oncology and 2 radiation oncology residents.  The department currently has one vacant endowed chair in oncology which candidates for this position may be eligible to fill as well as additional endowed support. 

The successful candidate will devote approximately 40% time (negotiable) to clinical instruction and patient care distributed among the VMTH Small and Large Animal Teaching Hospitals and Diagnostic Imaging and Cancer Treatment Center. The remaining time will be devoted to integrative classroom and laboratory teaching (15%), research and other scholarly activities (35%), and academic citizenship (10%).  Clinical responsibilities will include primary management of cases, instruction of veterinary students and technicians, mentorship of interns and residents, and participation in after-hours emergency coverage. Classroom and laboratory teaching responsibilities will include the education of professional students in our integrated curriculum and opportunities to interface with graduate students across multiple disciplines. Active supervision of house officers and in-depth participation in intern/resident training (including topic rounds, journal club, and backup support) is expected. Additionally, we expect the successful candidate will develop a strong, independent research program that aligns with expertise in the department, school, and university and builds collaborations with other basic and clinical scientists. Teamwork and collaboration are highly valued at Texas A&M University, and candidates are expected to demonstrate institutional citizenship that may include service to committees, working groups, and professional organizations.

The VMTH is a spacious facility with sophisticated diagnostic and patient care equipment, including but not limited to 40 slice CT, 3T MRI, video endoscopy, nuclear imaging, acid-base/blood-gas analyzers, oxygen and inhalant gas analyzers, standard coagulation as well as TEG and PFA analyzers, intraoperative cell salvage transfusion equipment, phacoemulsification system, high-flow oxygen therapy, color-flow Doppler ultrasonography, 4D transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, digital fluoroscopy, scintigraphy, and an ICU telemetry system. Radiation capabilities include TomoTherapy and Strontium-90 plesiotherapy. Surgical suites and instrumentation allow for complex orthopedic, neurologic, cardiac, thoracic, oncologic, and abdominal procedures such as stereotactic brain biopsies, cardiac occlusive device implantation, and subcutaneous ureteral bypass device placement. The hospital maintains Mimics and Echopixel licenses for three-dimensional reconstruction, with easy access to 3D printers.  

The VMTH has capable personnel including, but not limited to talented ICU technicians, an active multidisciplinary interventional radiology service, two in-house pharmacists with compounding capability, and a clinical trials coordinator.

Numerous research opportunities exist throughout the school and university. Laboratory space is available as needed and the SVMBS has a pool of qualified graduate students seeking a degree in biomedical sciences.   A generous start-up package will be available commensurate with the scholarly record and needs of the individual.  The successful candidate will have the opportunity to interact with approximately 60 small animal faculty members and an active group of house officers that includes more than 50 interns and residents from other medical and surgical disciplines. Each applicant must have a DVM degree (or equivalent) and must be a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM)-Oncology or must have completed an ACVIM-Oncology approved residency and have met the requirements to take the corresponding board examination. Applicants must be licensed or eligible for regular or special licenses to practice veterinary medicine in Texas.
